General

Zero Beat (ゼロビート Zero Bīto?) is an enemy encountered near the conclusion of Jet Set Radio Future. They show up around the time of the Golden Rhinos' appearance, running amok in Tokyo and spraying graffiti all over the city. Eventually the Zero Beats are faced off as the penultimate bosses of the game. As evidenced by their name, they are robotic copies of Beat.

Zero Beat is the last of the Standard type characters. Their stats are exactly like Beat and Corn's. They have mostly above average stats, with their cornering being their best attribute, but their acceleration faulters compared to the rest.

Overview[]

Appearance[]

Zero Beat, being robots with a design based on Beat, bear more than a passing resemblance to him. They are a metallic bluish-gray, with a wire circling their head that connects to antenna sticking out from where their ears should be (mimicking Beat's headphones) and glowing blue eyes based on Beat's goggles. Their upper arms consist entirely of white rings floating as if being worn as armbands. Their hands have three finger-like appendages, and gaping holes where the palms should be. A white oval ring hangs down from their chest, taking the place of the torso. Connected to this ring are their thighs, which float independently of the boots, which have pointed and curled-up toes and function as skates. From the back of their neck, another wire hangs freely like a tail. It has another white elliptical ring attached to the end.

JSRF Zero Beat No Tail Ref

Note: This current reference does not include Zero Beat's tail.

Personality[]

Zero Beat is one of the only characters to not show any signs or hints of a personality as its dialogue only consists of silent "....." responses. Regardless of this, DJ Professor K and Garam call the robot a "freak", and Beat himself calls it a "crazy guy". Other characters such as Gum and Boogie refer to the robot as a "fool" as well. Zero Beat also follows orders from their creator without question, and said creator boasts that they are "geniuses" as well.

Role in Jet Set Radio Future[]

Zero Beat is a robotic imitation of Beat. When Zero Beat is first revealed, one is shown to be in Chuo Street, and skates off after the defeat of the Golden Rhinos bigwig, Major Arms. After the defeat of Staff Officer Fire, another copy appears in the Skyscraper District and Pharaoh Park, once approached, it leads the player to the Site of Tokyo Line, where they have to face a train-like machine to rescue DJ Professor K.

At the end of the game, it is revealed they are actually the creations of Rokkaku Gouji, who refers to them as "his sons". They are finally defeated near the end of the game, after chasing down two in Shibuya Terminal during a match of Tagger's Tag.

Graffiti[]

Unlocking[]

Zero Beat can be unlocked as a playable character by completing the Street Challenges set in Shibuya Terminal while collecting all the Graffiti Souls in said area. Afterwards, the play must complete the Test Runs set in Shibuya Terminal with a Jet Ranking to unlock them.

Noted interactions[]

  • Gouji Rokkaku - Gouji is the creator of "Zero Beat" and as a result calls them his "sons" and "beautiful children" as well. He proclaims that they are geniuses during their showdown at Shibuya Terminal.
  • Beat - When Zero Beat first appears, many characters claim that the robot looks like him, Beat disagrees with this strongly and dismisses the robot believing that the Golden Rhinos are more important to focus on. In the Japanese exclusive post-game dialogue, he says: "So you're the reflection of me, huh? Or is the other way around?..."
  • Gum - During Zero Beat's appearance, Gum calls the robot a "fool dressed in black", and takes note that it bares some resemblance to Beat as well. In the Japanese release of the game, Gum is the only other character to say anything to Zero Beat if it talks to her. She tells it that the GG's do not turn anyone down, but questions that statement after saying so.
  • Corn, Yoyo, Combo, and Garam - If Zero Beat talks to either 4 characters in the Japanese release of the game, they will simply remain silent with "......", possibly being taken aback by the robot being in the garage. Garam personally calls Zero Beat a "freak" at one point near the end of the game and even asks Beat if Zero Beat really is him.
  • Boogie - During the endgame of JSRF, Boogie warns the player to watch out for Zero Beat at Shibuya Terminal.
  • Clutch - In the post game dialogue, Clutch is one of the few characters to say anything if Zero Beat talks to him. He will remark on its Graffiti Soul with: "The Graffiti Soul you have isn't fake, is it?"
  • DJ Professor K - Just like with the rest of the Rokkaku Group units, DJ-K takes zero likings towards Zero Beat and calls the robot a freak as copies of it ran around Tokyo, covering it in weird, abstract graffiti.

Trivia[]

  • As Beat's robotic impersonator, Zero Beat does the same intro/victory dance as him.
    • However, Zero Beat does not copy Beat's idle dance, instead having a unique one to itself.
  • In the broadcast cutscene for chapter 8, Zero Beat performs a breakdance animation that was only seen in a commercial for Jet Set Radio Future.[3]
  • In the cutscene where Gouji broadcasts "Rokkaku Banzai Radio", Zero Beat appears without its wire-like tail in DJ Professor K's studio.
  • Zero Beat is similar to Metal Sonic from the Sonic the Hedgehog series and Evila from the Space Channel 5 series (two other Sega franchises), as they are all robotic versions of their game's respective protagonists or mascots.
  • According to Ryuta Ueda, Zero Beat is described as a negative version of JSRF Beat, mysterious and alien like created by Gouji Rokkaku in the 2002 July issue of the Famitsu Xbox magazine.[4]
  • Zero Beat is one of the three characters with graffiti tied to unlocking them. The other two are Poison Jam and the Immortals.
  • Although Zero Beat is a robotic copy of Beat, their voice lines are not put through a filter like NT-3000 for Yoyo, or Roboy and the Noise Tanks, rather Zero Beat's voice clips are just Beat's but in a deeper tone. The only other robot character to not have a filter for their voice is A.KU.MU, who simply shares Gouji's voice clips.
  • Zero Beat's basis seems to be inspired off the silhouette of Beat that appears in the first cutscene of the game.
Tokyo Chaos

Beat's shadowy appearance in the cutscene might have influence Zero Beat's design.
