Tricks (トリック Torikku?) are a major maneuver and gameplay mechanic in the Jet Set Radio series. Throughout the series tricks are performed automatically, but also require the player to do an input to execute some like an air trick. The mode, Jet Tech, heavily focuses on the player performing tricks to get a big score for a "Jet" ranking.
Tricks are also present in Ollie King, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
Jet Set Radio series[]
Jet Set Radio[]
Beat performing the "Backslide" grind in Shibuya-cho.
In Jet Set Radio, and its various releases and the Game Boy Advance version, tricks on grind rails are performed automatically, not requiring an input from the player. Air tricks are simply achieved by pressing the jump button in the game. If the player does a turnaround trick while grinding they will receive as "x6" multiplier in the air and a "x2" when they land back on the rail. Wallrides are also performed automatically too.
Typing Jet[]
Beat performing a trick in Typing Jet.
According to the synopsis of Typing Jet, the player could decide on which tricks to perform to escape from Captain Onishima.
Jet Set Radio Future[]
In Jet Set Radio Future, the trick system was expanded upon. While some tricks are performed automatically like the "latch stances" by simply jumping on a rail or an air trick just by jumping. If the player presses either the X or Y button they will be able to continue to trick while grinding or during their descent from the air. X button tricks are performed quicker but reward the player with less points, while the Y button tricks are slower but reward more points in the end. Just like its predecessor, wallrides can be performed automatically. Additionally, there are Roboy training guides to help the player get accustomed to doing grind and air combos and wall riding.
Jet Set Radio Reboot[]
In the upcoming Jet Set Radio game, tricks where showcased in the little teaser that was provided. They seem to work similarly of that of JSRF's trick system, but nothing else about has been revealed yet.
Other games[]
Ollie King[]
A "Method" performed by Tez Tanaka in Ollie King.
In Ollie King, tricks are integral to how the player performs and gets ranked in the game. The game has a ranking for tricks that range from D to X. D to A rank tricks can be performed in most cases, but S, SS, and X rank tricks can only be performed if the player achieves big air during races. If the player leans forward, they will perform the trick known as "ollie".
Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing[]
In Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, tricks are performed by pressing the drift button while in the air. After performing a trick, the player will gain a boost a speed they use when they land back on the ground. In some locations like Shibuya Downtown it is possible to perform three tricks in the air to gain a max boost of speed while landing.
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed[]
In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, the trick system was slightly reworked, now being performed by the right stick which allows the player to perform some moves like a "barrel roll" or a "front flip" still giving the player an additional boost when they land.
