Tagging, (タギング Tagingu?) also known as spraying or painting, is a major gameplay mechanic in the Jet Set Radio series. Players gain the ability to tag graffiti after collecting spray cans.

Spray cans are the main source of graffiti in the Jet Set Radio series. Three types of cans are present: a yellow can, blue can, and a red health can.

Jet Set Radio[]
In Jet Set Radio, tagging requires input from the players when at large and extra-large graffiti spots. If the player passes a small graffiti spot, they will quickly spray the tag and move on. This also applies to the Game Boy Advance version of the game.
Jet Set Radio Future[]
In Jet Set Radio Future, tagging was heavily simplified. Similar to how the small tag was sprayed in Jet Set Radio, all tags in Jet Set Radio Future are sprayed with a button, the right trigger. This most likely done to compensate for the huge pieces of graffiti that are available to be tagged throughout the game. In the story of Jet Set Radio Future, graffiti isn't just regular spray paint, but the "Soul of the Streets". These are only visible to select people, mostly Rudies. This allows the graffiti to be used for more than just paint such as taking down the police or disabling electronics.
Graffiti commands[]
In Jet Set Radio, there are three types of graffiti commands: "Beat Type", "Gum Type", and "Corn Type". Six characters fall under the "Beat Type", five characters fall under the "Gum Type" and five characters fall under the "Corn Type". Beat type characters are in the middle in terms of difficulty, while Gum type characters are the most complex, and Corn type characters are the easiest.
