Piranha, (ピラニア Pirania?) or Sugar (シュガー Shugā?) in Japan, is a playable character and member of the GG's in Jet Set Radio. She joins the GG's after the player copies some of her moves.
Piranha is also another Graffiti character, however, unlike Gum and Yo-Yo, her health is not one of her drawbacks as she has a decent amount compared to most characters. Additionally, her graffiti stat is also good as well. Her real handicaps are her speed, which is just okay, and her spray can limit of 15 cans. Like the aforementioned characters, she is another advanced character in the cast.
Overview[]
Appearance[]
Piranha is rather curvy. She is seen wearing a white top with short sleeves, which is very low cut to the point of being open down to below her chest, and also bares her midriff. It has two red stars across the front and a larger one on the back, centered between her shoulder blades. Completing her outfit are white tight fitting bell bottomed white pants, with more red stars at the ankles. Her shoulder-length, dark brown hair sticks out in what appear to be thick braids from behind red tinted goggles, placed above her forehead. She wears bright green gloves with dark green/gray cuffs, and her skates are two toned gray, with bright yellow frame rails, and gray wheels.
Piranha also has a face tattoo of a red katana katakana marking representing the first part of her Japanese name, Sugar (シ), under her right eye. This marking does not appear on her artwork.
Personality[]
Piranha is a reckless woman who likes spicy food. She also seems to come off as more athletic and energetic compared to other members of the GG's, which is show cased in her idle dance and with her attire, which is noted to be a racing suit in her profile from the Game Boy Advance version of the game. In addition to this, in the original Japanese release of Jet Set Radio, she challenges the GG's to a race. Her dialogue in the GBA version consists of energetic responses too.
Role in Jet Set Radio[]
Piranha's role in the plot of Jet Set Radio is minimal. She only appears as a rival at the garage after completing the Explosion mission. She challenges the GG's to copy some of her moves in Shibuya-cho. When one of them completes these challenges, she joins the gang, and becomes a playable character. In the original Japanese release of the game, Sugar challenges the GG's to a race around Shibuya-cho instead.
From this point onwards, Piranha can be seen dancing near the middle of the garage on the character select screen.

Official profiles[]
Jet Set Radio Perfect Guide[]
- JP: テクニックは少々低いが、ガムタイプのなかでは最高のパワーを持つ。グラフィティメインのキャラ。[2]
- EN: Her technique stat's not that high, but she's got the most power out of all the Gum-type characters. Graffiti is her forte.[3]
Jet Grind Radio: Sybex's Official Strategies & Secrets[]
- Think of Piranha as a slightly more powerful counterpart to Gum. With strong graffiti skills, you can expect her to grab a lot of points while tagging the town. Though she's not as quick as Gum, she has a little more stamina, which makes her a good choice for levels that pack more enemies.[4]
Jet Grind Radio IGN Guide[]
- This honey is out to tag the town and she has the skills to rack up points doing just that. Piranha is a strong tagger and has a lot of stamina. She is good to use where there are lots of cops and rival gang members as she can take some punishment. Piranha is not very fast though. Pick up Piranha after finishing Explosion.[5]
Jet Set Radio GBA manual[]
- Not just her looks are electric; her souped-up magnet skates help to grind over everything. Piranha grinds so fast, she really needs that form fitting racing suit.[6]

Trivia[]
- In the E3 prototype, Piranha is known as Nuts (ナッツ Nattsu?).[7]
- Piranha's red tinted goggles are similar to dark adaptor goggles, used by meteorologists to adapt the eyes to darkness for observations at night.
- Piranha has two completely unique idle dances to herself, one seen when playing as her and another exclusive to her appearance in the garage.
- Piranha's E3 design has a small difference from her final appearance in the game, with it being stars on her goggles.[8]
- Piranha is the oldest female in the GG's, with the oldest male being Combo. She is 21 years old.
- Piranha and the Love Shockers share the exact same grind and air tricks.
- In the original Japanese release of Jet Set Radio, Piranha's showdown challenge was a race. This race would be reworked for chapter 2 against Beat as Combo tries to join the GG's.
- Piranha has three songs associated with her.
- In the original Japanese release of Jet Set Radio, the song "O.K. House" by Idol Taxi, played during her showdown.
- When the game got localized the song was changed to "Yappie Feet" from Deavid Soul.
- Due to Sega losing the rights to "Yappie Feet" for the HD release of the game the song was changed to "'Bout the City" from the Reps.
- In a similar fashion to Yo-Yo, Piranha is described as being not as fast in the Sybex and IGN guides for Jet Grind Radio, but the GBA manual refers to her being quick.
- As seen above, Piranha's artwork was censored on the Jet Set Radio page on Sega's website in the United States.
- Piranha/Sugar's logo would be featured in the Roller Champions Jet Set Radio Park alongside various other character logos as well.
