This is the trivia subpage for Jet Set Radio Future. This page contains general information about the game, to version differences and even some early ideas for the game as well. Please take the time to read through it and learn something new relating to the game!
General[]
- Jet Set Radio Future takes place in a separate world[1] from the one established in Jet Set Radio, as such, it is not a sequel to that game in any capacity, besides it being a follow up release.
- While the characters themselves do not have confirmed ages, Ryuta Ueda's intentions for the characters were to have them be older and smarter than their counterparts in Jet Set Radio.[2][3]
- Despite this, one character does have an age, that being Nushi at one week old.
- To promote the game in 2001, Smilebit and Wave Master would hold an event at Shinjuku Tower Records, promoting the game. At this event fans got a 2 song cassette tape that featured the original version of "I Love Love You" and a demo recording of song called "Ferry Men" by Guitar Vader.[4][5]
- Similar to Jet Set Radio, footage of Jet Set Radio Future can be seen in a music video, this time it was "Hella Good" by the band No Doubt.
- Despite the music video releasing the same year as Jet Set Radio Future, it has nothing to do with the game, and it is highly unlikely that it was considered to be a licensed song either, as the album the song was a part of would only release just a couple of months before Jet Set Radio Future released.
- Jet Set Radio Future is backwards-compatible with the Xbox 360, however, if played on the Xbox 360 instead of the original Xbox, the game will have many areas (99th Street, Fortified Residential Zone, etc.) in which the entire game will slow down for a few seconds. Whichever character the player picks will effect this, for example, playing as Beat will keep the game running relatively smooth, playing as Corn will cause brutal instances of slow down, likely because of his flowing jacket.
- In Yakuza 5, "The Concept of Love" by Hideki Naganuma, can be heard in a convenience store.[6]
- At an unspecified date, there was a rumor that conceptualized the idea of three unused characters being planned for the game and that their existence was only to be found in the Japanese release as they were removed internationally. This rumor did not gain much traction but it was enough to make people dig through the game's files to see if there was any mentions of said characters. This was confirmed to be completely false as the character's supposed names do not appear in any version of JSRF's files.[7]
- Standalone copies of Jet Set Radio Future would make a cameo appearance in the 2025 film, Roofman.[8]
Dialogue[]
- Jet Set Radio Future contains dialogue relating to Graffiti Souls that is usually not seen as most players usually have more than enough to progress in the story.
- The pieces of dialogue in question are:
- If the player has less than 25 Graffiti Souls, Rapid 99 will say: "Hah! What, are you kidding? You better go scrounge up some more Graffiti Soul points, kid, and come back when you get (certain amount) more Graffiti Souls for us."
- If the player has less than 40 Graffiti Souls, Clutch will say: "You fools must be lookin for that dude, Yoyo. Tell ya what... go find (certain amount) more Graffiti Souls. Lets see how far you're willing to go for your comrades."
- The pieces of dialogue in question are:
- In the Japanese release of Jet Set Radio Future there is a bunch of post game dialogue in the garage that did not get translated for the international release. Most of this dialogue refers to post game unlock characters such as the rival gangs, and other characters like Roboy and Pots.
- Here are some examples of the Japanese exclusive garage dialogue:
- When playing as some of the rival gang characters (Rapid 99, Immortals, Noise Tanks, Doom Riders, or Love Shockers) or Zero Beat, Gum will say: "GG's don't turn down anyone who comes to them. ...Or do they?"
- When talking to Corn as the aforementioned characters, minus Zero Beat, he will say: "And now, even the GG's have recruited some odd fish..."
- When playing as the Noise Tank, talking to Roboy will have him say: "Something tells me you and I are not so different..." This is a clear reference to the fact that Roboy was a Noise Tank prototype.
- If playing as the Immortal, when speaking to Garam, he will say: "Don't you ever again tell me to join you!"
- When playing as Pots, six members of the GG's have unique dialogue directed towards him.
- Gum will say: "Go back to your dog house".
- Corn states: "Didn't think this would happen when I left you for awhile."
- Yoyo will say: "Yo, don't go for a walk alone!"
- Beat will state: "The day has come..."
- Combo warns Pots with: "One bite - and you're gone. Haha!"
- Garam will tell Pots "Go look for food by yourself, ya hear me?"
- When playing as Gouji or A.KU.MU, Corn, Combo, and Garam will respond in silence with "......" while Beat responds with a "Hmph..."
- Here are some examples of the Japanese exclusive garage dialogue:
- DJ Professor K, has a bunch of unused dialogue that is meant to go along with his text present throughout the story. The audio for the dialogue is still present in the game's files.
- There is also unused Golden Rhinos files relating to NT-3000 which might have implied that the character would have been more involved in the game's story before being cut back.
Beta and early ideas[]
- Originally in the beta for Jet Set Radio Future, characters such as Beat, Gum, Corn, DJ Professor K, Yoyo, and even Garam, had 2D artwork to represent their character icons. This was eventually changed to be their models instead.
- In the earlier builds for the game, Gum's dress was colored red instead of light-green.
- Hayashi has a separate model of his hand holding a sword, as well as a second set of audio for fighting, that seems to indicate him using it. While this sword was present in some trailers it was ultimately not used in the final game.
- In the early builds of Jet Set Radio Future, "I'm Not a Model" by Russell Simins appeared uncensored on the radio player. This was obviously changed in the final release due to the sexually explicit lyrics that are present in the song.
- "Birthday Cake" by Cibo Matto was also uncensored in an early build of the game.
Version differences[]
Even though Jet Set Radio Future does not have many regional differences unlike its predecessor there are still tweaks and other small changes that happened between all six releases of the game.[9]
NTSC-J[]
- Interestingly, the Japanese releases contain end game garage dialogue for the GG's that never got translated.
- Halfpipes also function differently. Whereas in English releases, if you reach the end of a halfpipe rail that transitions into flat ground, you will transition smoothly onto the flat ground with no issue, Japanese releases you will fall off of the grind back into the halfpipe.[9]
NTSC-U/NTSC-J and PAL combo disk[]
- In the NTSC-U/J combo disk release of the game, players can perform the "Sewer Skip" which allows them to head straight into the Bottom Point of the Sewage Facility.[10] The glitch is patched out in the PAL combo disk.[9]
- Another glitch in the NTSC-disks is the NT-3000/Yoyo color palette swap, where Yoyo gains the colors of NT-3000, loses his voice and can cause other things such as the music in the game to stop playing.[11] In some cases, NT-3000 might have Yoyo's voice clips play instead thanks to both characters sharing the same ID in the game's code.
- For these releases of of the game, load times are considered the worst out of all versions.[9]
- The most obvious difference is the inclusion of Sega GT 2002 and bonus content such demos and videos relating to Xbox.
Standalone disks[]
- On these releases, the "Sewer Skip" glitch is patched.[9]
- Additionally some have claim that the NT-3000 glitches are fixed as well on the NTSC-U solo disk, but it can still occur.
