Grinding (グラインド Guraindo?) is a maneuver that appears in the Jet Set Radio series and Ollie King.

In Jet Set Radio, and its various releases and Game Boy Advance version, the ability to rail grind makes its debut. The reason why rail grinding was added to the game to allow players to enjoy high-speed thrills while still being aware of their surroundings in the level while hopping off.[1] The player's grind speed depends on how fast they were before jumping on a rail. If already dashing, they will travel at quick pace, but will eventually slow down. Jumping can increase the player's speed while on rails too. The player can also choose to slow themselves down by holding back on the left analog stick, however, in this game they will fall off if they come to a complete stop. In the Game Boy Advance version of Jet Set Radio, grinding allows the player to be invincible from bullets.

Jet Set Radio Future[]

In Jet Set Radio Future, the ability to grind makes a return, although some things were slightly tweaked, mainly the speed of rail grinding. Just like the last game, if the player holds back, they will slow down, but instead this time they will continue to grind until they hop off. If the player performs a trick while grinding, their speed will increase once again, the same applies if they use a Boost Dash as well. In game, there is a stat known as "Grind", which means how easy it is to rail grind, the higher the Grind stat is, the more tolerance there is when jumping on a rail. Roboy also has tutorials on grind combos and phone pole grinds.

Ollie King[]

In Ollie King, grinding is integral to the player's speed throughout races. Unlike Jet Set Radio or Jet Set Radio Future, where rail balancing was not implemented, it appears in this game. Balancing on the rail while grinding is key to keeping a good pace while racing. If the player fails to balance themselves while grinding, they will wipe out instead. A balance meter is also present while grinding.

Jet Set Radio Reboot[]

In the upcoming Jet Set Radio Reboot, the ability to grind makes a return. Just like with a lot of things relating to the reboot, it is unknown on how it will work in the game.

Infinite Grinds[]

Infinite Grinds,[2][3] are grind loops that appear in certain locations in the Jet Set Radio series. They are integral for the Jet Tech side mission. In some cases, wallrides are also key to allow for infinite grinds to continue.

Jet Set Radio[]

In Jet Set Radio, infinite grinds appear in all districts of Tokyo-to, and both districts of Grind City. However, they do not appear in each section of the Tokyo-to districts. In Shibuya-cho, an infinite grind can be performed at the bus terminal and Park Street. In Kogane-cho, infinite grinds can be performed at the sewers, the construction site/factory ruins, and the residential area. For Benten-cho, an infinite grind can be performed at Route Zero, the subway, Jinsei Lane, and Gekijomae.[4]

For Bantam Street and Grind Square, the player will most likely discover the infinite grind of each area while completing the Tag or Die and Rock 'n Roll Grind missions.

Jet Set Radio Future[]

In Jet Set Radio Future infinite grinds are present but are not available in each location. In the Shibuya District, an infinite grind can be achieved in the garage, Shibuya Terminal, Chuo Street, and Hikage Street. In the Rokkaku-dai District, infinite grinds can be performed at Rokkaku-dai Heights, the Tokyo Underground Sewage Facility, and the Fortified Residential Zone. For the 99th Street District, infinite grinds can be performed at 99th Street, the Skyscraper District and Pharaoh Park, and Sky Dinosaurian Square.

Chuo Street and the Fortified Residential Zone's infinite grinds are the trickiest to do as they require quick timing, reflexes, and positioning to master them. Infinite grinds can also help players complete points based Street Challenges and Jet Tech, if applicable. Although in the case of 99th Street, the infinite grinds are not present on the 500 point rails in the area.

Dogenzaka Hill, the Bottom Point of the Sewage Facility, Kibogaoka Hill, Tokyo Rokkaku Expo Stadium, and Gouji's Tower, lack a way to perform an infinite grind. For the Site of Tokyo Line, the area is a loop, so an infinite grind will occur regardless if the player tries to perform one or not.
