Beat (ビート Bīto?) is one of the Rudies living in Tokyo. He is a member of the GG's, and a playable character in Jet Set Radio Future. He can be considered as the game's mascot, as he is featured prominently on the boxart.

Beat is one of the few characters mandatory to recruit in order to finish the game, along with Combo, Garam and Clutch.

Overview[]

Appearance[]

Beat looks similar to his Jet Set Radio counterpart in Jet Set Radio Future, donning a yellow shirt and black pants. However, in this game his shirt is more of a yellowish-green and has black shoulders, he wears solid dark blue sunglasses, and there are long spikes or antennae that point outwards from the ears of his gray headphones. His skates are black and gray with light blue katakana spelling his name (ビート) down the front, as well as yellow wheels. In addition, he wears full black gloves as opposed to the fingerless variant his counterpart wore. His hair is burgundy and cut short. His name is also written in blue katakana on the front of his shirt, and there's a stylized record on the back.

JSRF Beat Ref

Personality[]

In the English JSRF manual, DJ Professor K describes him as "the mysterious kid that appeared in the streets of Tokyo." The Japanese JSRF manual calls him "enigmatic" and states he's an overconfident kind of guy who doesn't care for trivialities.

Role in Jet Set Radio Future[]

In Jet Set Radio, Beat was the leader of the GG's, but in Jet Set Radio Future this role is taken by Corn. Beat is a lone Rudie first encountered at Dogenzaka Hill. He is suspected of stealing the Goddess of Dogenzaka Hill, causing the blackout at 99th Street and is referred to as a "low-life" and a "rumor-spreading scumbag". He challenges whichever GG encounters him to a race around Dogenzaka Hill. After you have beaten him, the Rokkaku Police will appear, and Beat will join the GG's and hide out in the garage. From this point onwards, Beat becomes a playable character.

He seems to have an interest in taking over as the leader of the GG's, a reference to his leader status in Jet Set Radio. When confronted in Dogenzaka Hill, he will challenge Corn to gain the leadership of the GG's, as opposed to just the ownership of the turf when spoken to by Gum or Yoyo. If the player talks to him in the garage after he joins but before fighting the police, he will ask about Pots and then taunt the current GG talking to him by asking: "You sure that's not the leader in disguise? Heh heh." and ending the dialogue with: "It's only a matter of time before I become the leader of the GG's anyway."

Near the end of the game, the GG's are confronted with Zero Beat, robotic copies of the original created by Gouji Rokkaku that stand in their way.

Dialogue and noted interactions[]

Dialogue
Chapter # Quote
Chapter 1 Debut
  • What are you lookin' at?
  • You talkin to me?
  • Hmph.
  • So, you're the leader of the GG's? Heh… how's this sound? If I beat you in a race around Dogenzaka Hill, you and your buddies have to answer to me from now on. If you beat me… well, we'll just see when it happens [When playing Corn]
  • Hey, I've heard of you. You're one of the GG's huh? Tell you what… I'll race you. If I can beat you in a race around Dogenzaka Hill, then this place belongs to me. Got it? [When playing Yoyo/Gum]
  • Hope you won't regret that [Picking Yes]
  • Huuuh? You're so booooring… [Picking No]
  • [Victorious] Okay, okay. You win. You guys are tougher than I thought. I think I'll chill with y'all for a bit. "Beat" has joined you!

After unlocking Beat, but choosing to go back to the garage instead of fighting the police.

  • Anyway, I'm ready to rock. But what's up with that pooch, eh? Where did ya pick him up? You sure that's not the leader in disguise? Heh heh. It's only a matter of time before I become the leader of the GG's anyway.

After the first police shakedown.

  • Shibuya Terminal? Now that you mention it, there was this huge guy wandering around there... And fishy graffiti? That sounds familiar, but I didn't really look close enough to see if the graffiti that the fool was paintin' actually looked like a fish or nothin'.
Chapter 2 Before heading to 99th Street.
  • Rapid 99 of 99th Street. They don't show their faces in public very often. Some say Rapid 99 and Poison Jam are sworn enemies because something big went down a while back. I don't know the details, though. A friend of mine told me that the girls in Rapid 99 are real lookers. I just think he was too scared of 'em to say otherwise. In any case, it ain't gonna be easy to find 'em.

When Rapid 99 appears.

  • You meet Rapid 99 yet?
Chapter 3 After Rapid 99 reveals Poison Jam whereabouts.
  • Hey, is it true that Poison Jam used to cause trouble in Chuo Street under a different name?
Chapter 4 After Yoyo's disappearance.

When the Immortals appear.

  • Those Immortals really get on my nerves…
Chapter 6 During the Noise Tanks invasion.
  • Crazy stuff is going down all over town! Looks like it's time for a little clean up... GG's style!

After defeating all the Noise Tanks.

  • Time to get serious.
Chapter 7 When the Golden Rhinos appear.
  • There's Golden Rhinos' all over the place. We gotta put a stop to this!

Clutch appears.

  • This kid's kinda funny.

Called to the Fortified Residential Zone.

  • This time we should be able to tell if it's the real one or the fake Yoyo just by talkin' to him, right?
  • You just wanted some attention from us, right? Aww... [When talking to Clutch]
Chapter 8 During the Golden Rhinos attack.
  • That crazy guy?! What're you talkin' about?! He looks nothing like me. Besides, we don't got time to deal with that fool. Remember? The Golden Rhinos??

Before confronting Gouji.

  • Well, they told us to come. Don't look like we got any choice.
Chapter 9/Post game All regions.
  • There are some things that you can only feel when you're out in the streets, you know?

Japan only.

  • The day has come... [To Pots]
  • Don't forget to oil parts before the challenge. [To Roboy]
  • No matter where I look, you're still a fake. [To NT-3000]
  • So you're the reflection of me, huh? Or is the other way around?... [To Zero Beat]
  • Hmph... [To Gouji Rokkaku and A.KU.MU]

Note: No other GG dialogue appears in chapter 5 besides Jazz's.

Noted interactions
  • Corn - If Corn is the one to talk to him on Dogenzaka Hill, Beat will have a special dialogue with him: "So you're the leader of the GG's? Heh..." before challenging him to a race, with the condition that Corn and the others will answer to him if he wins. If Corn refuses, Beat will complain by saying: "Huuuh? You're so booooring...".
    • When challenged by Yoyo or Gum, the condition is simply for Beat to have Dogenzaka Hill as his turf. It seems Beat heard enough about Corn and the GG's to know he's their leader, and is using this chance to take over. Beat and Corn also seem to have somewhat of a rivalry, ignited by Beat with his goal of becoming the leader, also further shown in the Beat vs. Corn comic.
  • Gum - Gum has a negative impression on Beat before he joins the gang at first, calling him a "headphone wearing freak" and says if she could find him, she would show him "what's up". When Beat joins the GG's, this gets dropped instantly. Later on when Zero Beat appears, she notes that the robot looks like Beat, along with many other characters, to which Beat disagrees with.
  • Rhyth - If the player talks to Rhyth as Beat during chapter 3, she will tell him that he smells "weird".
  • Clutch - Beat is rather amused by Clutch, and often mocks him, if the player talks to Beat right after Clutch steals their Graffiti Souls, he will say: "This kid's kinda funny." After Clutch joins the GG's, Beat assumes that he wanted attention from them.
  • Pots - If the player talks to Beat after he joins the GG's but before fighting the Rokkaku Police, he will ask: "What's up with that pooch, eh? Where did you pick him up? You sure that's not the leader in disguise? Heh heh." taunting the current GG talking to him, and possibly more of a jab at Corn's leadership specifically rather than curiosity about Pots, continuing from their previous banter. He still seems surprised about the gang having a dog and seems somewhat curious about where he came from. In the Japanese exclusive dialogue, when talked to as Pots, he simply claims that the day has come in awe, this could also be a reference to Beat's joke about Pots being the true leader of the GG's.
  • Rapid 99 - During chapter 2, if the player talks to Beat, he will bring up Rapid 99 and briefly mention their rivalry with Poison Jam, but states he does not know the details. He also mentions that the all-girl gang are "real lookers" due to a friend of his, but thought his friend was too scared of them say otherwise.
  • Immortals - After the Immortals make their debut, Beat notes them getting on his nerves, revealing that the gang makes him tick.
  • Noise Tanks - When Yoyo gets kidnapped, Beat mentions that he has never heard of the Noise Tanks, and dismisses them rather quickly, stating that they should find Yoyo instead.
  • NT-3000 - As seen above, Beat claims that no matter where he looks, he can still tell that the robot is a fake.
  • Zero Beat - When Zero Beat first appears in the story, many members of the GG's, along with DJ Professor K, state that the robot looks like him. Beat disagrees with this and calls Zero Beat a "crazy guy", dismissing the robot and reserves his attention to the Golden Rhinos instead. In the Japanese exclusive dialogue, Beat amuses the idea of Zero Beat being the reflection of him, or it being the other way around.
  • Gouji Rokkaku - There seems to be some untold history between the two. As the plot progresses, Gouji reveals 2 Zero Beats and calling them his "sons". It is unknown why Gouji saw Beat significant enough to make dark duplicates of him. It is possible Beat might have had a run-in with him or the Rokkaku Group, and watching him escape from their police opposition impressed them enough to make a duplicate to copy his skills. In the Japanese-exclusive dialogue, Beat will simply say "Hmph." after Gouji Rokkaku or A.KU.MU talks to him, showing displeasure at his appearance in the garage.

Trivia[]

  • The first time the player talks to him in the garage, right after recruiting him, he comments that it's only a matter of time before he becomes leader of the GG's, which may be a reference to his status in the first Jet Set Radio of the series.
  • Beat appears on the covers of both original Jet Set Radio games.
  • In each game where Beat has his original look, he is available since the beginning of the game, whereas when he wears his Future attire, he is an unlockable character. This includes the first two Jet Set Radio games.
  • Despite being an unlockable character in Jet Set Radio Future, various official material such as the English manual of the game and the Japanese website already establish Beat as being a member of the GG's along with Corn, Gum, Yoyo, and Roboy. There is not an exact reason on why this was done in the first place.
  • Beat and Yoyo share the same idle dance.
  • After winning a Death Ball match during chapter five, the current character and Jazz will do Beat's introductory/victory dance.
    • Zero Beat, understandably, also performs Beat's dance as well.
  • Despite Beat appearing in his Future attire in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, his description references the events and characters of the original Jet Set Radio universe instead.
  • In the E3 2001 trailer for Jet Set Radio Future, Beat was shown performing his intro dance from Jet Set Radio via a silhouette.[3]
