99th Street (99番街 99-Ban Machi?, lit. Street #99) is a location in Jet Set Radio Future. It is a crowded shopping center, and is also the home turf of Rapid 99.

Overview[]

Seemingly expanding upon Roman Street and Gekijomae from Jet Set Radio, 99th Street's most defining trait is its large amount of neon signs and lights. The first area the player encounters here is a large pagoda-style building named the Benten Tower. It has two dragon sculptures wrapped around it that can be grinded on. One leads to the top of the structure, the other the road that leads to two places; the Skyscraper District and Pharaoh Park, or the garage. The north part of the location leads to the Tokyo Rokkaku Expo Stadium. The top of the structure is where Rapid 99 can be found. There is also a dark district, which might have been inspired by Jinsei Lane, from Jet Set Radio, as it is the residential area of 99th Street.

Story[]

During the story, the GG's will head to 99th Street to get intel about Poison Jam's hideout. However, before that can be accomplished, the Rokkaku Police ambushes them twice. After getting rid of the police force, 99th Street is tagged all over, which prompts Rapid 99 to show up. Rapid 99 challenges the GG's to a game of Jet Flag, to which they lose and proceed to reveal that Poison Jam's hideout is at the Tokyo Underground Sewage Facility.

If the player goes back to the top road of 99th Street during chapter 2, they will encounter a fight against Hayashi, this fight can be avoided if they simply go to Rapid 99 first instead.

99th Street does not come back into the story until chapter 6, where the Noise Tanks ransack the area along with many other places in Tokyo and later on in chapter 8 where the Golden Rhinos are present throughout the streets of Tokyo. Depending on what the player does in chapter 7, or 9, the Immortals will challenge the GG's to another round of Tagger's Tag, however this can be skipped if all of the the Street Challenges and Graffiti Souls of their home turf have been completed and collected before returning to 99th Street.

Trivia[]

  • The real-world inspiration for 99th Street came from Kabukichō, an entertainment district in Shinjuku. Additionally the streets of Hong Kong also influenced the area with its neon lights and populated areas, according to Ryuta Ueda.[1]
  • The kanji in the fifth 99th Street challenge "東,南,西,北 gates, grind" refer to the cardinal directions '東’ (east) '南' (south), '西' (west) and '北' (north) on the gates surrounding Benten Tower. The player must grind the plaza rail (the red rails behind the gates on the outer rim of the plaza) clockwise in a single combo, starting and ending at the 東 (eastern) gate without falling, for the Soul to appear.
  • Given its large amount of lighting and assets, this area is prone to slow-down when emulated on later consoles. It speeds up when traversing between the three subsections, but the plaza is by far the main offender, likely due to the various lighting and surface effects all in play at once.
  • In cut lines of dialogue, DJ Professor K references 99th Street being in a "sea of flames". These lines indicate that Staff Officer Fire, the pyromaniac, would have had a presence in the area instead of being in Highway Zero in the final product.[2]
