DJ Professor K (DJプロフェッサーK DJ Purofessā K?) is a major character in Jet Set Radio. He is the DJ for Jet Set Radio, Tokyo-to's premier pirate radio station, which plays nonstop, hardcore music. Throughout the game, DJ-K is the narrator of the story, commentating on the events that are happening in Tokyo-to.

He is also a playable character exclusively in the Game Boy Advance version of Jet Set Radio. In that version of the game, DJ Professor K is the best character. He is a Graffiti type character whose health is maxed out alongside with very high speed and graffiti stats, and is able to hold up to 30 spray cans.

Background[]

Note: This backstory (among other things can be found on a guide by IGN[2]) contradicts the actual description from the Jet Grind Radio game manual,[1] and the game. Proceed with caution.

The founder of Jet Set Radio, Professor K was born in Jamaica, and raised in New York City. Growing up to the influences of funk, reggae and dancehall, Professor K started off as a DJ in the Bronx. Though his pirate radio station in NYC was extremely popular and a hit with the underground, Professor K eventually had to leave the States as his station attracted the attention of the feds. Deciding on a new place to turn up his beats, Professor K set his sights on Tokyo, seeing it as the freshest and laxest place he could go to. Knowing that Tokyo-to had the potential to be "one big dance party", Professor K then set up Jet Set Radio to establish his sounds on the airwaves and his quest to keep the soul of the city alive.

In addition to his disk jockeying and being the fly voice of Tokyo's underground, he helps gangsters and Rudies accomplish their tasks and use his radio station as a hideout. He eventually encounters the GG's (Beat, Gum, and Tab) and assists them with their crimes and goals.

Overview[]

Appearance[]

In Jet Set Radio, Professor K is a dark-skinned man with orange lips and dark brown hair styled into five large, lightning-bolt-shaped spikes that move along with the beat of the songs he plays. He has a goatee of similar shape and color. Also notable are his gold-colored nose ring on his left nostril, sunglasses with bright blue lenses, and the yellow letter "K" on his forehead. He is always seen wearing a white shirt with what looks like a black tie in a zigzag shape. He also wears gold rings on both index fingers. The Jet Grind Radio manual reveals he is 6'1 tall.

DJ Professor K JSR Ref

Personality[]

Professor K is a quirky, upbeat and a charismatic DJ who likes to narrate and of course, being a DJ. He appears to have a high voice and likes to move his hands around as he speaks. He is always willing to help people in need, criminal or not and is a close ally of the GG's.

Development[]

According to Ryuta Ueda, DJ Professor K was inspired by a character known as Super Soul, a blind African-American DJ, in the 1971 film, Vanishing Point. Super Soul runs a pirate radio station and broadcasts events to the public while also helping out and encouraging the protagonist in the process as well.[3]

Role in the games[]

Jet Set Radio[]

In Jet Set Radio, DJ Professor K narrates most of the game's story (Combo narrates the flashbacks in chapter 2. However, Professor K does narrate the whole story in the original Japanese release of the game). His broadcasts are also one of the only sources of information about the events and characters in the game. He often talks between missions, as well as provides comic relief.

At the end of the game, Professor K is told by someone off-screen that they don't believe the story he told actually happened. His response to this criticism is vague, as he says "Okay, okay, sure" and ends his broadcast stating how there is no such thing as "the end" on the streets.

Jet Set Radio (GBA)[]

In the Game Boy Advance version of Jet Set Radio, Professor K plays the exact same role as he did in the console version. However, once the final stage is beaten, he becomes a playable character. He is located between Garam and Beat on the character selection screen. Unlike everyone else, he cannot be seen dancing like the other characters, only his picture appears.

Post mission Quote
N/A (Prologue)
  • Somewhere in Asia, there is a city that cannot be found on any map called "Tokyo-to", but everyone just calls it Tokyo. The two hottest things on the streets of Tokyo-to are the punks wearing magnetically driven In-line Skates powered by newly developed 'netrium' batteries and 'Jet Set Radio', a pirate radio station manned by the DJ 'Professor K', that plays nothing but non-stop, hard-core music.
  • Those street punks have been named 'Rudies' by the people of Tokyo-to. They roam the streets and cover the city with their personal graffiti, claiming that it is their way of expressing themselves to the world.
  • However, ever since the Metropolitan Government and the financial conglomerate, the Rokkaku Group, combined their efforts to co-found the '21st Century Project', the streets of Tokyo-to have never been the same again. Police crackdowns on the Rudies have become more severe, and Captain Onishima is more anxious than ever to put them behind bars.
  • The streets of Tokyo-to are ready to explode.

  • Goji wants to use the record to make a contract demon so he can take over Tokyo and the rest of the world! If those guys get all the pieces, Tokyo, this radio station, sushi, ramen, hamburgers and everything else are gonna be history!
Final Groove Original Japanese release only.
  • Jet Set Radio!!!
  • That huge turntable of evil, the Rokkaku Building, is a pile of dust, right along with the Rokkaku's scheme. Now they're saying that the building was destroyed in a construction accident--yeah right! But now, Goji's son has taken over the Rokkaku family business, and Tokyo is back to its glorious old self.
  • Now, the Noise Tanks are in-repair, the Love Shockers are broken-hearted again, but Poison Jam is back, and planning more mischief.
  • Goji wanted to control the hearts of people who he couldn't buy with his money. Just another millionaire with a grudge. It's the root of all evil they say. But it turns out the record he was looking for, the "Devil's Contract", was just a old indie record, a hoax! Maybe the demons in his own heart made it out of rumors and superstition, or maybe that record is really somewhere here in Tokyo? Somewhere waiting to be found.
  • But anyway, don't fret about that. DJ Professor K is gonna lay down some cool grooves and take away them blues!!

Every release.

  • What's that? You think I just made all that up? Ha ha ha! Sure, sure, okay. But watch out! Someone just might have their sights set on Shibuya-cho again! On the street, there's no such thing as 'The End!'

Trivia[]

  • The songs that play during Professor K's broadcasts in Jet Set Radio are "Funky Radio" by B.B. Rights and "Moody's Shuffle" by Hideki Naganuma.
  • In the data files for Jet Set Radio, Professor K has more associated files than any character, including several outtakes/alternate recordings of lines in the finished game. Interestingly, two of the voice clips (one in Japanese, one in English) are reminiscent of a freestyle rap.
    • Parts of this freestyle were included in the GBA release of Jet Set Radio.
  • Anytime the player completes a tag with DJ-K in the GBA version of Jet Set Radio, he will always shout "Jet Set Radio!!".
  • On the soundtrack release for Jet Set Radio, DJ Professor K is credited as a featured artist on track 16, "Jet Set Station", by Toronto.
  • According to the Japanese JSR site, the only thing in Tokyo-to he doesn't know is how to do is fill an income tax form.[4]
    • Although his profile in the JSR Perfect Guidebook contradicts this by saying "he knows everything to know about the city".
  • On the official Japanese website for JSR, it is revealed that DJ-K has a friend known as "Brother Q". Brother Q is not mentioned anywhere in the game or guides and manuals for JSR, but did provide updates to fans about the game's upcoming international release and eventually the launch of the JSRF website.
  • Similar to some characters, DJ Professor K's artwork differs from his appearance in game. The "K" tattoo on his forehead is a solid red color in his artwork, while on his model it appears yellow with a red outline. Professor K also has a "DJ" tattoo on his left arm in his artwork that is not present on his model. The two rings featured on K's hand in the artwork do not appear, as only one ring is present on both hands, additionally the blue bracelet is also absent from his model. However, the nose-ring that appears on DJ K's model is exclusive to it as it does not appear in his artwork.
  • Just like Garam, Yo-Yo and Goji, DJ-K does not have any eye textures behind his sunglasses.
  • In an interview with Ryuta Ueda, he would reveal that DJ K is a storyteller who reveals that the events in Jet Set Radio are a fantasy, not set in reality.[9]
