Corn (コーン, Kōn^?), also known as Tab (タブ, Tabu^?) in the European and North American versions of the game, is a 16 year old Rudie living in Tokyo-to as a member of the GG's. He is a playable character in the Jet Set Radio series. He is one of the first three characters the player can choose after the opening tutorials of Jet Set Radio, along with Beat and Gum.

Overview

Appearance

Tab wears a light blue jumpsuit along with a large dark blue knit hat that covers his eyes. His name is displayed in yellow katakana (コーン) on his hat. Tab's hair is spiky and dark brown, and can be seen sticking out from under the back of the hat. His roller blades are mostly yellow, with gray patterns and blue wheels as well as red thrusters. On the back of his jumpsuit, he has yellow katakana that appears to spell his English name, "Tab" (タブ).

In game, he wears a gray wrist device on his left arm. In addition, the yellow katakana on his hat is replaced by a yellow rectangle.

Personality

While not described as in depth as Beat or Gum, Corn is consistently described as a genius, as his profile in the Jet Set Radio Perfect Guide notes this. Additionally, his Jet Set Radio Future counterpart is also described as the self-styled genius leader of the GG's, it is fair to suggest that Tab has similar traits in this incarnation. As such, he's presumably somewhat arrogant with general enthusiasm for his work. The dialogue he has during his challenge seems to indicate this arrogance, stating he needs to test Beat's qualifications for hanging with him and asking Beat if he thinks "he's all that" after the first challenge. His profile from the perfect guide also reveals that he has a liking towards hats.

Role in Jet Set Radio

At the beginning of the game, Corn first gives a series of challenges for Beat to complete to test his skills, giving some advice about graffiti and holding onto the backs of cars. After completing them, Tab decides Beat is cool to hang with and tells him he can dodge bullets by dashing. Unlike Beat and Gum, his role in the game is minimal after that. When not being played as, he sits on the sofa near the window in the garage.

In the Jet Crush race for Benten-cho, Corn is the chosen CPU competitor.

Corn/Tab's graffiti challenge begins with up, making him a "Corn Type" character. He can hold up to 30 spray cans.
He does the Makio, X, and Frontside grinds. His backwards grinds are the Ally-oop Soul and Porn Star.
His air tricks are the Method and 360. His halfpipe air tricks are the Judo 180 and Method Backflip 180. His backwards air tricks are the Judo Backflip and Shifty. His backwards halfpipe air tricks are the Stalefish 180 and Misty Flip.

He wears a knit cap pulled down low over his eyes. With his decent technique stat and low graffiti stat, he's better suited for tricks.

Jet Grind Radio IGN Guide

Tab is the cool Tokyo Hip-Hop cat; he is the ultimate breakdancing graffiti tagging B-boy. He has the correct B-boy documents; he rocks suede Adidas and listens to Slick Rick. Tab likes to tease the cops when they are chasing him by stopping and breakdancing around them.

This cat is good for performing tricks so he is good for gaining high points. He can carry more paint than most of the other characters but his graffiti skills are so-so. Tab is good for pulling off Infinite Grinds. Recruit Tab at the start of the game.

Jet Grind Radio: Sybex's Official Strategies & Secrets

You'll discover Tab's strength lies in his trick abilities than his graffiti skills. Therefore you'll do well to use him on levels more suited to gaining points while performing infinite grinds and other stunts. He can also carry a few more Spray Paint Cans than some of the other characters.

Jet Set Radio GBA manual

This hip punk is moving up in the gang. He can paint the skates off anyone.

Trivia

The song "That's Enough" by Hideki Naganuma is the theme song of Corn.^[1]
Despite the official Japanese guidebook stating his Japanese name to be "Corn", there is speculation that his name was intended to be "Cone" instead. This is based off of his logo looking extremely similar to a cone or drill.
In relation, even though his official Japanese name is "Corn" in Jet Set Radio, and international name as well in Jet Set Radio Future, concept art of the character for the rejected Jet Set Radio Wii pitch displays his name to be "Tab". This may be due to the artist, Corey S. Lewis, being from international origins himself.
For some odd reason, the IGN guide for Jet Grind Radio mentions Tab wearing Adidas and listening to the rapper Slick Rick.
